Exploring - The Art of Mutual Discovery

Exploring in the negotiation process is a lot like playing detective – and who doesn't love a good mystery? This stage of mutual discovery allows both parties to learn more about each other's needs, constraints, and objectives. It's Sherlock Holmes meets hospitality, if you will.

During this phase, you gather as much information as you can. Not just surface-level stuff, but deep, insightful information that reveals the heart of what your client really wants. It's like pulling back the curtain on their desires, getting a peek into their innermost hopes and fears when it comes to hospitality.

Think about it this way: imagine you're hosting a dinner party and you've invited some distinguished guests. Would you serve them the same old dishes you cook for yourself every day, or would you take the time to find out their likes, dislikes, dietary restrictions, and favorite cuisines? The answer is pretty clear, isn't it?

Your aim in this stage should be the same. You need to dig deep and find out what your client truly desires, what they're willing to negotiate on, and what is non-negotiable for them. Armed with this knowledge, you can position your property or service in a way that aligns perfectly with their needs.

However, don't forget to have some fun along the way. Let me share an anecdote to illustrate this. Once upon a time, a Sales Director was in the exploratory stage with a potential client. To break the ice and establish a more relaxed rapport, the Director casually mentioned his weekend hobby of sketching caricatures. As it turned out, the client was a fan of art and requested a caricature. Needless to say, the negotiation process took on a more enjoyable, human tone from that point on.

Humor and shared interests can add a sprinkle of fun to the process and help build a stronger connection with the client. But remember, in the end, it's all about finding the key that unlocks the door to a mutually beneficial agreement. And sometimes, that key could be a well-placed joke or a shared hobby.

Next up, we'll dive into the art of presenting, where your offer takes center stage. But before you rush off to prepare, take a moment to savor the joy of exploration. After all, it's not just about the destination, it's about the journey too. See you at the next stage of our negotiation journey!
